The Marana Unified School District (MUSD) encourages parents of students receiving Title I services to participate in all aspects of their child’s education. The District maintains programs, activities and procedures designed to put into practice Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) parental involvement goals. MUSD has a Compensatory Education Policy which addresses Title I Parental Involvement. This policy, IHBD, is Board approved and may be viewed online at https://policy.azsba.org/asba/browse/allmanuals/marana/IHBD (Arizona School Boards Association).
The Marana Unified School District supports the parental involvement components of Title I Part A, Section 1118 of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015. The District will convene a group of parents from Title I schools to assist in the joint development of its district wide parental involvement plan. A copy of the district plan will be provided to the parents of Title I students for review and comment. This Title I Parental Involvement Plan may be accessed online at https://www.maranausd.org/TitleI_PIP and will also be made available at parent meetings.
Parents are involved in the school improvement planning process as members of the site council.
To improve student academic achievement and school performance, the Marana Unified School District will provide the necessary coordination, technical assistance, and other support to assist Title I schools in planning and implementing effective parental involvement activities. This will be accomplished by having flexible meeting times, dates, and locations. A designated Title I staff person from each school will be the liaison between the district and their site to disseminate information.
The Marana Unified School District will coordinate parental involvement strategies in Part A with parental involvement strategies under Head Start, Parents as Teachers, and 21st CCLC, to the extent feasible and appropriate.
MUSD will conduct an annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of this parent involvement plan, with the involvement of parents. The evaluation will include identifying barriers to greater participation by parents in parental involvement activities. This will occur with the assistance of Title I schools and their site councils who will consider the results. The data from the results will be analyzed and used to design strategies for more effective parental involvement support to the schools and to revise, if necessary the parent involvement plan for the following school year.
To improve student academic achievement, the Marana Unified School District will work with schools to create an environment of strong parental involvement and support partnerships between schools, parents, and the community, through the following activities described below:
A. MUSD, in collaboration with its Title I schools, will provide assistance to parents of children served by the school district or school, as appropriate, in understanding the following topics:
- the state’s academic content standards
- the state’s student academic achievement standards
- the State and local academic assessments including alternate assessments
- the requirements of Part A
- how to monitor their child’s progress
- how to work with educators
B. To foster parental involvement, the District, along with its Title I schools, will provide materials and support such as literacy training and the appropriate use of technology to help parents work with their children to improve their academic achievement.
C. Emphasis is placed on the value of contributions by parents. MUSD will, with the assistance of its Title I schools and parents, educate its teachers, principals, and other staff in how to reach out to, communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners. Researching successful models of parent involvement will help implement and coordinate high-quality parent programs that build ties between parents and schools.
D. The Marana Unified School District will to the extent feasible and appropriate, coordinate and integrate parent involvement programs and activities with Head Start and the Parents as Teachers Program, and conduct other activities, such as parent resource centers, that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children.
E. The Marana Unified School District will ensure that information regarding schools, parent programs, meetings, and other activities, is sent to the parents of participating children. The information will be clear and concise, and to the extent practical, in a language parents understand, and will include alternative formats upon request.
