  • Marana High School: Graduated Class of 1982

I grew up in Marana attending what was then, the only schools in the area, Marana Elementary School, Marana Junior High, and Marana High School. Looking back, it’s hard to separate my experience from the people who shaped it. The friendships I built over those twelve years are really what stand out the most.

Some of my strongest memories come from being part of school athletics and student life. I remember following the girls basketball team as they went on to win a Summer BCI National Championship and later a state title. I also remember the excitement of big wins in boys basketball, including beating Corona del Sol during their 48-game winning streak and back-to-back state championships. There were football games, dances afterward, and plenty of time spent in the commons area just being a student and enjoying those moments.

Academically, I had teachers who challenged me in ways I still appreciate today. Mr. Vitabek’s government class and Mr. Natta’s economics and geometry courses pushed me to think differently. Mrs. Mann stands out in particular, she wasn’t the easiest teacher, but she made me work harder than anyone else had. I had her for two years, and she played a major role in preparing me for college. She also nominated me for the Try-Hi-Y program, where Vickie Patton and I represented Marana at the state convention.

Beyond the classroom, I was involved in Key Club, student council, basketball for four years, and track my senior year under Mr. Brady. Those experiences helped shape how I understand teamwork, leadership, and responsibility. Mrs. Mann, in particular, also helped spark opportunities that pushed me to grow beyond school, including an interest in travel that has stayed with me. I've now visited 49 states.

My time in Marana prepared me well for life after graduation. I went on to earn a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and a Master’s in Sports Studies from the University of Massachusetts. More importantly, I left with a strong work ethic that has carried me through careers in both business and education.

As a teacher today, I see how much things have changed, more technology, more distractions, and a larger, more complex district. Marana was much smaller back then, and the sense of community was incredibly tight-knit. Most people knew each other, and that closeness shaped our experience in a powerful way.

Still, some things haven’t changed. Marana continues to be competitive in athletics and produces students who go on to make a difference in the world. For me, though, the most lasting part will always be the people, the teachers, coaches, and friends who made those years unforgettable.
